How to count manuscript paper sheets

Counting 400-square sheets

Divide the character count by 400 and round any remainder up to a full sheet. For example, 800 characters is exactly 2 sheets, while 801 characters is 3 sheets. Manuscript paper assignments are often given as "within X sheets" or "about X sheets," so rounding up is the safe way to check.

Handling punctuation and brackets

On manuscript paper, punctuation marks and quotation brackets each occupy one square by convention. This tool counts them as characters too. However, if the recipient's guidelines specify a particular counting method, follow that instead.

A guide for book reports

School book reports are often assigned as "within X sheets of 400-square manuscript paper." Paste your text and you can immediately see how many sheets your current length corresponds to, so you can keep an eye on the target as you write.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do you count manuscript paper sheets?

On standard 400-character manuscript paper (genkoyoshi), you divide the character count by 400 and round any remainder up to a full sheet. For example, 801 characters is 3 sheets. Punctuation marks and brackets each occupy one square by convention, and this tool counts them the same way.

Are spaces and line breaks counted?

You can switch this. By default the sheet count is based on the character count with line breaks removed, but you can choose whether to include or exclude spaces and line breaks. Adjust the counting method to match your submission guidelines.

Is the text I enter sent to a server?

No. Counting characters and calculating the number of sheets happen entirely within your browser. The text you enter is never sent to or stored on a server.
