Reiwa began on 1 May 2019, Heisei on 8 January 1989, Showa on 25 December 1926, Taisho on 30 July 1912, and Meiji on 25 January 1868. From Gregorian to Japanese era you can estimate with "Reiwa = Gregorian − 2018", "Heisei = Gregorian − 1988", and "Showa = Gregorian − 1925" (mind the month and day in an era-change year).

The very first year in which an era begins is called the "first year" (gannen), which corresponds to year 1 numerically. For example, Reiwa 1 (gannen) is 2019. In this tool, entering 1 for the year displays it as the first year.

In a year with an era change, two eras exist within the same Gregorian year. For example, 2019 has both Heisei 31 and Reiwa 1. Because Gregorian to Japanese era is judged by the exact date, it correctly shows which era that day falls in.

Reiwa began on 1 May 2019. Reiwa 1 (the first year) corresponds to 2019, and Reiwa 2 to 2020. The Gregorian year is found with "2018 + the Reiwa year number"; for example, Reiwa 6 is 2018 + 6 = 2024.

It switches at the era-change date. For example, in 2019 the period up to 30 April is Heisei 31, and from 1 May onward it is Reiwa 1. Likewise in 1989, up to 7 January is Showa 64, and from 8 January onward it is Heisei 1. Because this tool decides by the exact date, it converts the boundaries correctly too.
